Statement on Australian Principal Occupational Health, Safety, and Wellbeing Survey

Friday, 22 March 2024

The findings from the annual Australian Principal Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing Survey conducted by the Australian Catholic University (ACU) paint a very concerning picture.

As the survey acknowledges, many school leaders are thriving and making positive contributions in their communities. However, school leaders also face increasing levels of physical violence, threats of violence, and bullying. With the survey showing forty-eight per cent of Principals surveyed were subjected to physical violence, and fifty three per cent experienced threats of violence.

Offensive and threatening behaviours are not acceptable in any workplaces, most definitely not within schools.

These challenges are compounded by increasing workloads for school staff, reducing the time spent on teaching and learning, creating an environment that is not conducive to positive learning outcomes for students or a healthy workplace for staff members.

The ACSV supports the recommendations of the survey, including prioritising support for school leaders, a reduction of administrative burdens, taking steps to address inappropriate behaviour, and the supporting the development positive school-home relationships and behaviours.

Ultimately, the fundamental role of schools extends beyond learning; they must also be a safe space for students and staff. Addressing these issues requires a comprehensive approach that encompasses not only workload management and violence prevention but also initiatives aimed at fostering positive relationships, mental health support, and a culture of mutual respect and understanding within educational institutions.
